Description This was a commission for where he asked for a drawing of Merilee, the tambourine-playing member of "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kids" cartoon. It was an old Hanna Barbera show from the 70's where a group of teenagers perform in a band, which is a front for their spy activities. Like Scooby Doo, they solved crimes with the aid of their snickering dog, Elvis. With this commish Iwanted to show both the musical side and the espionage side of Merilee, plus I wanted to make sure I created a good rockin' pose for her, which I'm satisfied that I did. So, here's one more commish for my classic cartoon commission drive....wanna have one of your own to add to the collection? Note me and I'll make it happen!

It haunted me for years until I finally did some research and rediscovered who this character was and what show she was on.

Very nice.Β  I'd forgotten this cartoon, nice to see someone remembers.Β

A little bit of trivia - Merilee's voice was provided by Judy Strangis, who would later become memorable as Electra Woman's sidekick, DynaGirl.

I remember catching an episode of this once, at around 3 in the morning on Boomerang. I must've been about 11 or 12. It wasn't a very good show, but I remember thinking that this character was hot, so I stuck around.Β

This is a side to Merilee that I have never expected, and it looks very good. I never expected to consider Merilee packing a heater, so this is a welcome change from what was known of the series.

Thanks for posting, friend! Very good work!

Not only is this a pretty sexy illustration, but I'm also fond of the linework. Simple and flowing - I've always aimed for that level.

Thank you! I appreciate it, especially because I'm mainly a "cartoony" cartoonist, and drawing thing like this that are more illustrative are tricky for me. Glad to hear that you liked it, meaning I must have done something right!

I admit that I'd never seen the show before I got this commish, but man, it was quite a discovery when I saw a clip on Youtube. A bit bland in the storytelling, but I loved the rotoscoped intro (i.e. animation that was traced from live action footage, in case you didn't know). Best animation to come out of Hanna Barbera since the 1940's Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Was it on Boomerang once or can I find it on YouTube?

The "Butch Cassidy" cartoon first ran on NBC Saturday Mornings from September 1974 to September 1975 for a total of 13 episodes. The show ran on the USA Cartoon Express show in the 1980s and replayed on Boomerang off and on.

The lead character Butch Cassidy was inspired by 1970s pop idol David Cassidy of "Partridge Family" fame.

Oh, okay!- I was actually thinking that Butch kinda looked like David Cassidy when I first saw him

I think they used some of the animation and model sheets from that cartoon for that Adult Swim show, Sealab 2021

The character designer for the "Butch Cassidy" series was Takashi Masunaga.

He also did the character designs for other Hanna-Barbera programs in the 1970s and for the "Dungeons and Dragons" series for Marvel Productions in the 1980s.

I found one episode on Youtube. The opening credits (as usual) are the best, in this case due to the fact that the show's characters were rotoscoped, giving them more fluid, realistic movements than was usually seen in a Hanna Barbera cartoon.

I just watched a clip, and I must say that was pretty smooth-moving animation for Hanna-Barbera. That's cool that they used rotoscoping- I've been a fan of that technique since I discovered Ralph Bakshi and his use of it

American Pop? Isn't that the movie where one of the characters say, "Kansas is corny!"? That was a pretty interesting film.

That's one of my favorite lines! But the Rotoscoping in Wizards and even Lord of the Rings is great too. I don't care what any Tolkien purists say.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Goblinthegreat In reply to JayFosgitt [2009-05-18 19:52:16 +0000 UTC]

It's a funny line because it's true

Don't forget about that other Bakshi flick, Fire & Ice- Frank Frazetta had a hand in making that, and it was just oozing with rotoscoped goodness.

Hardcore Tolkienites can recite every part of the One Ring's inscription, but that doesn't mean they should use it as a successful pick-up line

My brother and I always talk about how Hanna Barbara tend to steal there own ideas since some of the cartoons we seen always have a group of kids solving crimes or playing in a band.

"The Archies" was also a Saturday AM ratings winner in the late 1960s...with original songs "played" by the Archie Gang in every episode.

"The Monkees" was influential in incorporating chase scenes with the bad guys with the song of the day.

That stuff was far out, man.

It's good to keep those memories alive for a new generation to discover.

The best pin-up art using old cartoon characters to me is when the characters are doing something that they could be naturally doing in their original cartoon show...perhaps with a different fresh slant on things.

New yet faithful. The best tribute paid to the original creators.

When tv networks in the 1970s noticed "Scooby Doo's" high ratings, they requested Hanna-Barbera to create similar shows for their own schedules.
H-B got along with many programming execs to deliver their shows on time and within budget.

Who can say "no" to the network brass?
