Description
This is the 4th panel from the "0" page of the MerDawn story I did for Joe Linsner of his character Dawn (originally published as the 6 page back up story in issue#3 Dawn Return of the Goddess in 2000). At this time he had never done Dawn as a mermaid, and I had always wanted to do her as one. We had known each other for several years beforehand via working for the same publisher, and I had expressed interest in doing Dawn as a mermaid...someday. So it came about that Joe wanted to see her done by me as a mermaid. The "0" page, which this panel is from is like a page 0 to this story, which was published separately in his Dreams of Dawn issue for Wizard.Dawns' scales are little skulls, so she has SkullScales. Her fins are like the petals of a red rose.
This was the first full figure I did of Dawn as a mermaid. At this point I had decided the look of all but the treatment of the petal-fins of her tail. Here they are not as structured as they became when I finally returned to doing her as a mermaid in the 6 page story. The disk of sunlight coming through the water is in the shape of the halos that feature in the series.
This treatment is what I will bring to the new Elf~Fin comic/Graphic Novel I'm working on now with Julie Ditrich.

It was nice to use the halo like the sunlight coming down into the water. If these MerDawn pages are collected, I think I'll retool this fin on her tail to be consistant with the other 6 pages to bring it in line and consistancy, otherwise it is fine.

Joe Linsner has mentioned to me that he intends to at some stage collect in one Graphic Novel, all the non-Linsner Dawn artwork done by his friends and other professionals, into an anthology style collection. Included would be the Dreams of Dawn wherein I did 4 panels, and the MerDawn/Angel 6 page story I did. I have loosely discussed that I'd like the opportunity to retool the 6 page story to extend it to a 9 page story. When I get the go ahead to do that... I will.

Choose 6 of your best works that you feel showcase your skill base, and try for varietly in subject matter and treatment. If you have a work you feel is suspect in quality remove it from your folio. You are only as good as your worst work that you present, as a lesser work will be remembered.

I wouldn't exactly say ' a huge' difference. More like it's done on less space than some of the other ones, hence less detailed... Smaller the room, smaller the details.

Oh wow, there is such a huge difference between this one and all the other panels. It almost looks like you did this in a hurry....Nothing bad or anything, it just does not look as detailed and controlled as the other panels do.

I do remember my paint brush was rather blunt the day I did this panel, and the art supply store seemed too far away. I'd say my deadline prevented me from going out for half the day to get a new brush, so I worked with what I had.

Breath-taking. I love the light behind her...really adds a somber mood to it, almost religious..with the way the light is shapped. The way you did the bubbles adds a sense of movement as well. This is masterful!
