NIENKEI am currently making an image for a contest that is horrendously complex, with over twelve source photos from seven different stock artists. I needed a break, so I challenged myself to make a pic in 3 or 4 hours, with all the bases from the same source. I’ve been asked for another centaur by a few people, and I really wanted to make something from Grinmir-stock to say thanks for the support. So here it is.
The horse is a Friesian. The breed comes from Frisia, part of the Netherlands, so I looked for a name in the Frisian language. Nienke is the Frisian diminutive of Katherine. I’ve altered the shape of the chest a little, but I’ve kept most of the horse the same. This beautiful animal just radiates strength and power, and I didn’t want to lose any of that. Besides, a female can be muscular and strong.
The model is Marie - Grinmir herself. The costume and weapon are unchanged, but the hair has been completely reworked to blend with the horse. The mane contains elements from both the horse and the woman, and also a great deal of over-painting as well to strike a balance between the silkiness of human hair and the coarseness of horse hair.

panting hair are a painful work...if u don't know the flow of the hair, there, u got a messy manip. one...*sigh....*

Mine take ages. I saw a comment once under a manip that said "I spent four whole hours on this!!!" To me thats a real quickie - something just for fun.

Manipping is fun, but I still like to do it as well as I can. I hate taking cheap shortcuts to save time - like not adding shadows or using mist to hide the join between a skirt and grass

I don't normally care for manips, but this one caught my eye. You got a great angle on the Frisian, and blended the human element so well. And a female, finally! Most centaurs I see are bare chested studly males, this is a strong female! Great work, I love it!

Thanks muchly. I spent a couple of years with a group of mannipers making LOTR fanart that wasn't at all legal, and we always put notes about our inspiration and choices and I kind of got used to it

I've got a list of projects lined up, but I will be eventually making another centaur. What she looks like will depend mainl on me finding the right sort of stock. You have to get a horse with exactly the same angle as the torso.
