Description There's a common misconception that evolution states that we came directly from monkeys. This is false. Evolution states that we share a common ancestry with them.

Yes but by using that logic you can go back far enough and say that we are still fish, back when our earlier vertebrate ancestors were the size of a thumbnail and had nothing but a stiff backboneΒ

Tail bone, duh.

Apes are monkeys too.Β  As are all catarhines, which is a clade we're in.Β  All Catarhines are monkeys because the parent clade haplorhines are also all monkeys, divided by new world and old world variations.

Yes but that's like saying all Pterosaurs are Dinosaurs, they're not. Pterosaurs simply diverted into their own group from an ancestor to both them and dinosaurs

No, it's not.Β  Pterosaurs aren't dinosaurs and nobody ever said that.Β  They are Archosaurs though, which has dinosaurs, pterosaurs and crocodilians.

You clearly don't know your taxonomy.

Birds are dinosaurs, but pterosaurs aren't dinosaurs.

Dimetrodon inst a dinosaur either, it's actually one of our ancestors, or at least it represents mammalian ancestors.

I know that, I'm just saying that using the logic of apes being monkeys wouldn't that also mean that Pterosaurs are dinosaurs? It doesn't make sense

Also yes I know what dimetrodon is, I know about the Synapsid family lol

No.Β  I just said Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs.Β  They're cousins of dinosaurs just like crocodiles are.Β  The parent clade is Archisaurs.

The parent clade of Apes is basically monkeys.

My snark is sarcasmy grace my dude, 6 am ruins that part then, huh? Good luck convincing people that we're monkeys. That'll help us try convince the world evolution is just a bunch of monkeys decided to evolve into a tail less, heavier ape for no reason. Last comment. Evolution theory is different for everyone. That probably includes the moron me that is more into Quantum physics. But to my simple decaffeinated mind, are you saying this:

Early primate ancestor (similar to monkey today?) -> Branches off to differing branches (great apes, monkeys, lemurs, etc etc....) -> Person

Because that truth I accept, sure we evolved from a species of monkeys then. But not true monkeys, just monkey like primates.

Unless you're saying this. People are in the monkey tree- which my speed reading found somehow. That was mostly the argument I was debating about (actually not really debating). Simply stating monkey puts off people and have us think about the modern monkey.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Impious-Imp In reply to Bezrail [2017-08-05 13:43:13 +0000 UTC]

........no. Β no its not different for everyone.Β

Even if we were from the monkey tree we'd still be monkeys in the same way that a golden reteiver is still a dog and a dog is still a wolf and a wolf.is still a canid and so on.

A house cat and leopard and a puma are all as much cats as lions and tigers are. Β Their catness is the same as our monkey-ness.

Apes are catarhinnes which are a member of the haplorhines. Β All of which are monkeys.Β

Look at a cladogram. I made one just for you. Β drive.google.com/file/d/0B8wyD…

Apes have every single feature that monkeys do. Β Indont see how you can say we're apes but somehow bot also a member of the parent clade.

Old world monkeys and platarhines are distinct from eachother, basicly in how the nose holes are splayed in new world and pointed down in old world monkeys. Β Just like ours. Β A trait we share with every single ape and monkey in Africa and asia.

The monkey ear, our ear, is unique in the animal kingdom and seen only in monkeys.

We also have a tail bone which is a reduced tail.

We aren't really talking about rocket science here, it's simple logic. Do you also know who has shortened, hidden tails? Apes. We are part of the Great apes family- last time I've checked.
i.imgur.com/smJ5NLJ.png

tbh this is a silly debate over a single word. Monkey refers to a generic primate with a tail, monkeys rely heavily on their tails for climbing. Apes and Great apes may also climb, but are heavier in size and more intelligent.

Nice try, but that is fabricated. The only known kind of evolution there is macroevolution, where one species adapts to it's environment such as birds growing different beaks and feathers. As for kinds to develop into other kinds, hahaha no.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FeralHydra75 In reply to Jell-o-Emperor [2016-04-15 17:25:23 +0000 UTC]

But we have evidence of that within transitional species of whales and amphibians. To ignore that and even state their fabrication is ludicrous.

Monkeys, great apes, humans, are all "Homo-" We all have two legs, two arms, hair, give live birth, yadda yadda yadda...
The prefix just means that we are of the same genus, not the same race. It's the scientific last name that defines a race. "-sapiens" is our last name.
We are technically our own race of extremely smart and big monkey, If you think about it

I guess I'm something in the middle when it comes to religion and science,
I doubt there's really a true god that started it all, there science makes loads of more sense for me,
but a life is so very short, compared to the world itself, me, like many others prolly do,
doubt dying is the last step before disappearance---wait, that was not related to the stamp...errrrrr

So true! I always liked fish and Stegosaurus and other dinosaurs! /shot
but yeaaaa, at least, we're not -only- from apes/monkeys/whatever,
