Description Four-wings are a lineage of vertebrates endemic to the Larkhore cloud forests, comprising 45 known species ranging in size from 40cm to over 2m in total lenght. All species have brightly-coloured plumage as well as facial ornamentations. Although four-wings are legless animals that spend their whole life on the wing, most species have two or more fleshy erectile wattles hanging from their bodies with which they anchor to a branch at night or during bad weather.

Four-wings are frugivores, using their pointed rostrums to pierce hard-shell fruits that form their staple diet.

Their reproductive system is somewhat similar to that of marsupial mammals; females give birth at a very early stage of development and carry their young in an external pouch.

Awesome work Though I wonder, does it use a hydrogen bladder to stay aloft?

Thanks. I didn't think of that but it's a great idea, my thought was that living in a windy environment would be enough.

Wow! Is the force of gravity lighter in Laarkhor? How does a four-wing stay up in the air when they anchor at night? Or do they dangle like bats in that instance?

Leaubellon In reply to meihua [2012-04-01 15:33:00 +0000 UTC]

TBH, I haven't given much thought about it, my initial idea was that the species sleeps on the wings at high altitude like some swift species do, but with the additional possibility to anchor themselves at trees in stormy weather to not get drifted too far away. That would imply that four-wings sleeps at low altitude/tree level only in windy conditions that would be sufficient to make them stay in the air like kites. ^^

eh, is that alien or a future creature?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leaubellon In reply to MickMcDee [2012-03-21 13:19:20 +0000 UTC]

Since it's dwelling in an Earth-like environment, I guess I can say future creature although to be honest, I didn't give much thought about its possible phylogeny and such. Thus if I can't come up with something plausible, then I will say it's alien.

Intresting concept well executed looks alien and familiar at the same time. Only thing that strikes me odd is the approach of let them reproduse like mararsupial mammals as young birds need space to train their fly muscles. A kiwi like approach might fit better like the kiwi "glues" one huge egg in a tree and the young brid hatches fully develeoped ready to fly and care for itself.

Leaubellon In reply to SymbioJoe [2012-03-15 22:08:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, that's an interesting idea although I think that producing and bearing (until laying) a huge egg would be quite an impediment for any flying creature. As for training their fly muscles, just like with marsupials, the youngs, at a latter stage of development, can leave and get back into the pouch at will so I did imagine them learning to fly while attached to their parents by their erectile wattles.

Awesome design, I never would've thought to have all four limbs be wings, but it works. But daaaaannngg, that mouthpart is scary, even if it only stabs fruit.

oh thank you so much! I am glad that you're actually aware of what happend here. It was tough, struggled through chest high floods in my area, but everything is okay now. Thank you so much for your concern, you take care too

Oh dear. So you live right in the devastated area?
I have to reluctantly say that this isn't big news here, but it should be. I heard of it from Filipino members on a sport message board I hang on, but unlike you, most of them apparently live in safe areas since the power didn't go out back then (they're under Storm Signal No. 3 at this very moment though ).

Yay, positive thinking, that's the way to go!

As for here, it's cold. Other than that, political scandals, sport humiliations, in short, the usual stuffs; I bet you'd get a more exciting view from abroad. Actually, I realize that IRL I don't know much aside from what happens in my street; I guess I'm a bit of a nerd.

It's about winter there isn't it? well I think it's about time you stretch your legs a little..hmmm don't label yourself as a nerd, that's a little harsh don't you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leaubellon In reply to Enzoguri [2009-11-03 21:46:58 +0000 UTC]

Nah not really; here, winter season officially starts on Dec 21, the coldest period occurring generally during Jan and Feb; hence, it's strategically way too early to resort to desperate self warming measures.

Being labelled a nerd has some bright sides actually. It makes dumping people without an explanation naturally self-evident.
