Thank you mate I really like this little beach - at the other end there's a stretch of rocky outcrops that seem almost martian further out, and I really want to capture them some time

Thank you Renata, this is one of my favourite songs too

I don't think this photo bears much resemblance to what's going on in the song, but both make me feel hopeful and that's why I think the title works

Thanks for the

Ideal. I'll save it for a night when I've got all the lights down, TV off, feet up and I'm reading a decent book

I'll dig it up on iTunes or Napster and have a listen

haha cool now you made me want to do such too! i havent calmed down like this in awhile. now I need to order a new book

what do you usually read?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

matt-h-mitchell In reply to J-and-R [2008-12-10 20:11:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh God, there's so much... I'm reading Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the 3rd time; it's an old book but still better than most of the new Star Wars novels. Anything that's themed strongly around friendship really because friendship is really important to me. That's why "A Knight's Tale" is my favourite film

I love Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Bernard Cornwell's version of the King Arthur legend; Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth saga; Robert Ludlum's Bourne Trilogy (haven't got very far through it yet!) and naturally the Harry Potter books! Yeah, I'm 35 and I still read Harry Potter

What about you?

My wife likes Danielle Steel and Marian Keyes, same sort of books apparently

The problem is if I tune into what I'm reading, I tune out of everything else. Are you like that?

I am glad you resisted the temptation to shoot straight into the setting sun and decided to capture the reflecting sun on the rocks. a bit later that day and the shy would have a prettier hue.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

matt-h-mitchell In reply to KirlianCamera [2008-12-07 10:10:10 +0000 UTC]

That's a good point and something I'll bear in mind in future

I still don't have any filters yet so I don't like to shoot into the sun unless there's cloud to diffuse it a little.

Sorry for another comment, but I have to ask. Did you shoot on landscape, or aperture/shutter priority? And did you use some kind of filter or polarizer? How was the editing? Sorry abt that amount of questions but I loved the clarity and sharpness of this mate

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

matt-h-mitchell In reply to oO-Rein-Oo [2008-12-04 12:13:39 +0000 UTC]

No problem mate, comment away!

I tend to shoot on shutter priority, and if I'm using a fast speed like 1/100sec then I'll use Burst as my shooting mode. It means my memory card gets chewed up with unwanted shots (I took over 240 photos on that evening alone just to find 4 or 5 that I liked!) but I'm able to capture a series of movements in the waves and then choose which one I like the best. The only filter I have right now is a UV filter, which doesn't even fit my lense properly and I have to hold it over. Christmas should put this right hopefully

I'm not so sure about the editing side of it because unfortunately I didn't have much to do with that but I can find out for you - I'm the first half of a symbiotic relationship when it comes to my deviations

What I do know is that the photo was reduced in size (resolution-wise) before the sharpening was done - that makes it clearer when displayed on DA, and I expect other techniques such as saturation, burning and a boost to contrast were used. Hope this helps?

oO-Rein-Oo In reply to matt-h-mitchell [2008-12-09 05:59:20 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm I shoot several shots and I always have trouble choosing them later on the computer but I don't use the burst mode, it is a good idea when shooting something like waves and movement... My biggest problem is choosing the pics

The editing I should improve with time and trying lots of things like I'm doing now, so don't worry abt that... The thing you said abt sharpening the pics... Now that is something I didn't know, I knew it is not good to reduce the size of the pic on dA and that the pic should be resized before uploading but I didn't know that sharpening the pic before of after it would make any difference

Thanks again mate for the useful info
