Description So this is pretty much the final render of the Yamato battleship I was working on. It is not the most recent render but I don't have the latest version on my cpu at the moment and I was tired of pushing back this release. So, if you search a bit, you should fin some minor errors like floating meshes and things like that. I shall update this deviation once I get my hand back on my usb key where is the latest file.

So, what have been added since the last deviation? The back as the front of the ship have been completely modeled; little random meshes (like the floor door and munitions boxes) have been added, protection and sandbag around the divers 25mm; I have created an ocean with the ocean simulator (not sure if it looks great or not); and I have joined the boat hull and deck.

There would still be a lot of things to add on this work to make it better (reworking the main part, adding smaller components like doors and control panel) but I am satisfied with it as it is so far so I'll switch to another project.

Anyway, I should update this soon, so if there is something you'd like me to show (like the back that I didn't really zoomed yet) or if you'd like to see the wareframe of some parts just ask me.

I hope this pleases you and I wish you a great day and a half!^^

It depends alot on what you want to model. If you want to do objects, try a car or something like that [link] as it contains alot of complicated forms. A high detail weapon could also do it. Be sure to have some great references would be my best advice.

If you want to model characters, just find some character sheet/reference/t-poses (they are all over the net) and start modeling it.

I don't really have any other advices. =/ Do complicated things and don't stop working.

Great model, I just started modeling in blender an my most recent undertaking is the Iowa class battleships. would be great to see an anim between those two. until I can get my new laptop it's on hold. Any tips for ship modeling in particular.

I'd say patience is your best friend.XD Other than that, not really.
Please tell me when you'll have finished your ship.

Like a boss, dude! I've been waiting to see the final, and I can hardly believe it. Can't wait to see an animation showcasing all the details.

I know someone that wont be willing to talk about battleship for some month, am I right?

Congragulation on your modelling, it tuned out pretty nicely. ^^

I hope your proud of your achievement in this.

wow, it's really comming togather And look at that detail Amazing modeling,
Btw, are you using a version with a wooden deck? this is a tillable plank texture of nice big scale with bump and spec-map [link] it was modified from a Cgtextures.com-texture.
maybe you can use it anyways Good luck and keep posting results

Thanks! I'm glad you like it and I am greatly thankfull for the textures. They look amazing, can't wait to use them!^^

much could be achieved with an ocean material.

MrSide In reply to GraphixS6 [2012-06-04 03:19:55 +0000 UTC]

Very true, but even if there is an ocean and three different material colors, this is more a modeling presentation then a fully textured scene. I intend to do materials for the ship and the ocean later, but it will wait a long time.^^'

If you were aiming for older-era CG, a cartoon (like the CG Iron Man), or a black and white/monochrome CG.. maybe I'd see it as finished, but it feels like its missing details. The texture quality doesn't match the modeling. This makes me lean towards preferring no textures at all.

MrSide In reply to rikere [2012-06-04 03:18:02 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you. This is still unfinished as it currently doesn't have textures on. Well, there is a darker grey and a brown material but those are just blank generated colors. There is still a lot of work before this will be truly finished. But for now, let us say the modeling is roughly done.^^

Fantastic work.

Interesting color on the deck. Is it made of wood?

The ocean surface is well modelled as far as I can tell. Perhaps a bluer or greener hue would be more natural? Perhaps a challenge for the future would be to show the ship under way, making a wake.

Would appreciate as many different views as you care to render, from different angles and distances, with varied lighting and weather conditions. As you add detail, more cloe-ups would be nice

This model could be a setting for scenes showing the crew at work, battle scenes etc.

MrSide In reply to golem1 [2012-06-04 03:15:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

The deck is only a brown material with no texture at all. I only put it there mainly to help make the difference between the deck and the rest. No texture yet.^^'

The ocean isn't really modeled. I only used a modifier that did most of the job for me. Didn't want to take credit for it. Creating a water materia should effectively be a fun experience and I should try it someday.^^

Okay! I'll try to take as many interesting angle I can, but changer weather conditions is out of my current skillset.

Yush, I'd like to do that but it will be for a distant tomorrow.^^'

About the wooden deck, I was wondering about the actual ship.

The ocean simulator is very good, I wouldn't spend time duplicating its function, but maybe extending it, if for example it can't yet produce whitecaps.

Again, I really love this model, it tells me things about warships I never knew before.

IJN? International Japan...naval? I'm saying anything.XD But seriously what does it stand for?

NezumiYuki In reply to MrSide [2012-06-04 10:50:41 +0000 UTC]

Close, actually IJN stands for Imperial Japanese Navy, hence they were IJN Yamato, and IJN Musashi.

Very nice Blender models by the way!

A seriously amazing modeling job. Congrats!

It was rendered with Cycles? (when you will find the time you could enhance the materials a bit, for a more photo-real shot - it would look amazing. And don't forget the rising sun flag )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrSide In reply to MatejMo [2012-06-04 03:05:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Nope, it was rendered in blender internal. I could try to make a cycles render at some point but it was supposed to be a modeling shot with no material. I only put the darker gray and the brown to make things more visible but it confused a lot of people. >.<

Gasp! I forgot the rising sun flag!
