Fantastic work, still using Vista home basic?

Glad you like it, thanks. Yes, still using that bloated shiny thing, although I did try to install Open Suse recently on a PC I put together for someone. It's a Pentium 3 with only 400 MB of ram, so I thought Linux could utilize such antique hardware better. Wouldn't even boot (it froze at welcoming screen). Maybe Suse isn't such a good choice for an old PC? I'd love to put some Linux in there because all the drivers and software are already on the DVD in most cases which saves quite some time.

As for me switching to some of the Linux distros:

Seeing that there is a little chance I'd get the games I like to play working easily really puts me off. I could use dual boot... but then it's not really alternative.

For 400MBs of RAM, stick with XUbuntu or one of the operating systems for older machines. OpenSuSE needs at least 600MBs, Ubuntu too needs about 512MBs.

As for windows games... it's a hard problem because Microsoft control the entire market. The fact that any windows games work on FreeDesktops at all is a miracle and I personally see the people who work on wine as heroes doing unforgiving work trying to create a compatibility layer for the entire of windows and every possible library without any documentation or help from the people who wrote it.

My best advice and the thing that has allowed others to free themselves from Windows, move your gaming experience to a console, the web or games that release Linux ports (lots do if you look). Otherwise you're always going to be trying to run Windows programs on a system that isn't Windows.

Thanks a lot for nice and informative reply. Turns out it was not fault of Open Suse, but semi-defective old harddrive. Ever Western Digital harddrives die after a decade or two it seems.

As for the consoles I'm a kind of guy who enthusiastically reads every new graphics card review, overclocks everything possible... so I sort of enjoy being a PC gamer. Not mentioning the possibility of mods and better visuals compared to consoles. Silly me. God damn Microsoft and Direct X. I might end up with dual boot again though, trying out Linux distributions is really fun.

Ah that'll do it, old hard drives really seem to slow down computers these days when we do refreshes.

So you're too smart to be a user and not pro enough to be a programmer? :-P It's ok, you can't help being a hacker (any more than I can) find what interests you and have some fun Perhaps you'll get into one of the fancy foss games where you have full control and you can help the programmers with your ability to test and mod?

I find hardware much easier to understand than software... well probably because it is. But in regards to software, I'm pretty much just a consumer. I don't think I have ever even tried to learn any programming language. My "hacking" skills end at editing a config file or registry. I can install an OS or find software that suits me, but that's about it. Pathetic. I think that was a huge motivation for learning to paint, tired of being "just" a consumer. This urge to create something myself.

Thank you for feedback, greetings to India! My uncle visits India every two years or so, I guess he feels spiritually attracted or something like that. He does hate the monkeys though.

Sure, you start, then upload it somewhere and send me a link as a PM. Or I can start but chances are it's gonna be too strange for you to enjoy working on it. If it's gonna be something fancy I suggest going with gimp *.xcf format because it supports layers, if it's gonna be more basic maybe let's just go with a *.png.

Ok, when I come up with something I'll let you know, now it's just an idea "let's do something cool together" . I often do my stuff in MyPaint, could it be an *.ora file?
