Thank you very much to everyone who commented on and ed this piece!

This image looks OK on my screen, but the color intensity, brightness and overall balance varies somewhat on the screens I have viewed this image on. Please keep that in mind when commenting!

This was created for an event and it shows all the "hero" ships from the Star Trek shows and movies since the 1960s; all the ships commanded at one time or another by the five (six, counting Riker) captains:

Captain Jonathan B. Archer
Captain James T. Kirk
Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Captain Benjamin L. Sisko
Captain Kathryn Janeway

FAQ:
The ships are all to scale, even if in perspective that isn't obvious.
The lighting in the scene is more the 'romantic' version than the 'realistic' one, as per request.
Custom textures (created by me) were applied to some parts of the ships (e.g. warp nacelles & bussard collectors).
Minor distortions are caused by the extreme camera angle.

COMPOSITION: Base nebula rendered in Apophysis. Added matte painting elements in Photoshop. Created textures for planets in Photoshop using base images of my own photography and some public domain images from Mars (final texture resolution 16384x8192). Created base meshes for the planets (two layers, one surface, one atmosphere; didn't bother with clouds on this one). Rendered the main background, including the nebula 'matte painting', setting up material parameters for the surface and the planet's atmospheres in Lightwave. Used the final background render as a backdrop for the scene setup with all the ships which was rendered in Lightwave as well. Final composition, color and contrast balance, plus a some additional background elements, completed in Photoshop.

SCENE STATS: 2,828,130 polygons, 128 light sources ("distant", "spot", "area" lights), 764 surfaces, 40 objects in total.

WORKFLOW:

MESHES: Galaxy-class by Prologic 9, Defiant-class by Skye Dodds, Sovereign-class by Ralph Schoberth, Constitution-class & Constitution-class Refit by Dennis Bailey, NX-class by Escelce, Intrepid-class by Sarod, Planets (incl. textures) &  Nebula by me

Beautiful image!

How long did it take to render ?
My computer and laptop is okay with handling the typical 1 to 4 light render.  The low end up laptop will not network render (LuxRender) anything bigger than 1000 x 1000 image, its very weird.

Thank you!

To be honest, I don't actually recall. But I did render in passes. The planet/moon setup was the initial scene and rendered and then I used the same file, but removed the planets, and added the composited background in. That way I could retain the light sources (pointed at a Null object) and then setup the ships. The planet render, due to 16k textures and quite a few subdivisions.. maybe 2-3 hours on a Core2Quad. The ships didn't take all that long. 50 minutes give or take. Ended up doing that a couple of times though, for fine tuning.

As long as you had 'good tears', I'm OK with that. An emotional response to my artwork is a huge compliment for me. Thank you.

My critiques are useually very simple. For this one .... one of the best homages I have ever seen. Every series on display with a gorgeus back ground. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

It's not wallpaper resolution at present. The width is possible, but you'd cut off half in height. Once it has been used by the requestor for its intended purpose, I will see if I can turn it into a wallpaper-able format.

Thank you!

Recently finished my frist star trek series with Jonathan Archer and his crew on the enterprise. This was just so good i wish it would not have ended that fast. 4 seasons  just were not enough.

Oh, nice. You're the first person I know who started with ENT. Nice. So you can technically watch the whole Star Trek franchise chronologically (if you continue with TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY) in that order. Although TNG/DS9/VOY overlap timewise (e.g. they are set in the same time frame). The movie "First Contact" shows the first warp flight by Zephram Cochrane's Phoenix (even if it's TNG based).

I agree though, 4 seasons were a little short. They had a 5th planned, and I believe something is in the works. It would also have included a refitted ship (Columbia-class). If you haven't seen any of the other shows, then you will be surprised about the Vulcans (and other species, e.g. the Klingons) moving forward. I've been a fan for almost 30 years, and it was nice to see a retrospective development. It's a shame that the Andorians aren't really that prominent in the other shows, but there are other species.
