THIS GUN. When I saw your WIP thread at the RPF, it was your gun that inspired me to make my own.
Unbelievable. I love the use of found materials and staying true to the original design.
This is the quintessential ray gun in my opinion. Awesome work!

I'm pretty sure its the same as on here - Plastic Cactus
Haven't been on there in a while. I used it to flesh out ideas for my raygun project.

I'm doing something similar, I was wondering how did you color the raygun? Is it possible to tell me the medium and the technique? Thank you
Nolmac

Hi Nolmac,
Here's the process I used -
I masked off any areas that I didn't want painted with masking tape (The face of the guage, antenna, etc.)
The handle was made of wood, so I had to seal the wood (Wood has pores, which can effect the paint). For this I took some superglue and applied it to the entire handle. I basically dipped my finger in the glue and rubbed it on the handle.
I then prepped the gun for painting by sanding it.
THen I primed the gun with a dark flat primer.
After the primer was dry, I gave it a second lighter coat of primer.
Then I used a bronze brownish colored paint and coated the gun. (Can't remember what kind of paint it was, but it was some kind of antique bronze stuff)
THen I lightly sprayed it with metallic silver (Just enough to give a metallic look.)
Then another coat of the bronze stuff...And then a light second coat of the brown stuff.
After it was dry I lightly used steal wool on the gun. Then I buffed it with a rag.
For the rust and verdigris I used acrylic and applied it with a brush.

Can't remember exactly how much each individual item cost, but the total was about $70.

I'm wondering, because this is so impressively done, do you collect or MAKE cinema props? I've always been an admirer of prop production, but I haven't tried too much of it. I've made a couple pieces for a theater company I work for, but nothing as exciting as this.
Question 2: How heavy is that thing?

Hey Quarkhopper,
Yes I do make and collect film props . I've been into this hobby for about 12 years now.

Absolutely gorgeous work and attention to detail. You've definitely captured the spirit of steampunk and the retro-futuristic fiction of the Buck Rogers era in this piece.
