In my headcanon, Luna didn't TRULY retire. She's is STILL the Princess Of The Night and The Protector Of Dreams. I mean, she still has to protect all of those fillies and colts from those horrible nightmares, no?

That bothered me, too, lol.
I did just have the thought though - Celestia didn't visit ponies in their troubled dreams when she ruled alone, so surely Twilight won't either. Maybe Luna is still doing her work in the dream realm, without actually being "in power" or raising the moon anymore.

Eh, technically the argument is actually sound.
It does seem a little unfair, though Luna should just rule for a little bit longer, if only just to validate (I'm guessing) more equal stipend of retirement funds as her sister. I don't know the intricate details of retirement pension and years of service/work, especially for a pair of retiring royals, considering I'm no where near that old yet; but, if what I'm getting from some games is correct, if some other branch of Equestrian society helps set what can be classified as 'personal' funds for the princesses from the treasury, Luna might technically have a smaller share compared to her sister if they view her banishment as non-service. Then again, folks do seem to agree that Celestia is fairly convincing when talking to the social elite, and most probably don't want to piss off Princess Luna anyway. XD

And she was finally going to be free of pain and free of all her problems.
AND PLUS Luna had to go into dreams and fight nightmares on a daily... or nightly as it were.
While Celestia got to sit back and judge contests and make public appearances for publicity!!

Considering that Celestia actually confessed that dreams duties were very hard, I guess she didn't do any when he sister were away.
Probably after that Luna taught her first. But I just can't imagine how these very first days, er nights of dreams duties turned out. Those poor ponies.

Yeah I was kinda having the same thought hahaha. Not that I wanna discredit Luna, but it just seems like her reign should barely be starting.
What if the plan was for Celestia to retire and Luna to take her place? Twilight instead could be her assistant; still an important task that would require her to move and dedicate her life to new responsibilities! It seemed to me that Luna just kinda got lumped in with Tia. The episodes could have all gone the same way as well; Luna and Tia could've had a brief vacation together as it might be one of their last, and Twilight can still go through her arc with all of her friends maintaining their positions.
...a different thought also occurred to me; who is watching over other ponies dreams? o-0 Is Luna still doing that, or....

Personally, given how important the princesses are, I don't think they should have retired at all, even if every eventuality was planned to help Twilight along. I mean, come on; you guys raise the sun and moon, you've lived in Equestria for Faust knows how long, and several other factors. Even if they didn't do as much in day-to-day actions, they're still too important to just kick it back for the rest of eternity.
