Just recently I tried to explain alignments to my new D&D party... first thing I did was to show them this chart. After YEARS it's still the best one I saw

Yeah. I've been playing Pathfinder now for quite a while and I still reference this and it's the first resource I show people whom I'm trying to help understand it. One of the big things to remember is that while the characters, with a few exceptions, are pretty good exemplars of each alignment a character can fit the alignment and be quite different from the example here.

The most universal and agreeable chart of them all!

Just sayin, Captn Mal is Chaotic Good. He's an anti-hero, and rebel. Neutral good implies he does good all the time, because he can, not because of the law or for a reward.

The best way to teach people alignments and their explanations. It's always good to relate the things you've learnt to the things you like.

True Neutral looks like Treebeard, but it looks like there's buildings or something in the background, so that can't be right. Great quote though.

I only disagree with the Neutral Evil selection.. Xenomorphs are driven by instinct, and even the xenomorph queen, while somewhat vindictive, was going after the threat that just killed her offspring. The Alien xenomorphs are pretty much neutral.
Now, a better Neutral Evil is SkyNet, at least as far as it relates to humans.

Xenomorphs are definitely neutral evil. You said yourself that they are driven by instinct, and their instinct is to kill anything that moves. The definition of a neutral evil character is someone who does whatever it takes to survive, regardless of the rules or whoever/whatever gets in their way. They are out for number 1, themselves. This is evidenced in the movie Alien Resurrection where 2 xenomorphs kill one of their own kind and spill his acid blood on the floor so they could escape their prison. There certainly are better examples of neutral evil out there, but xenomorphs do fit the category.

Phenenas In reply to Apathygrrl [2012-06-13 23:57:36 +0000 UTC]
You described a neutral evil character like so: "Someone who does whatever it takes to survive, regardless of the rules or whoever/whatever gets in their way." That is the exact definition of a neutral character. The alien killing one of their own kind to escape their prison? There are plenty of animals who would and do kill their own in order to survive.

mantispid In reply to Apathygrrl [2012-02-07 07:56:44 +0000 UTC]
But per the rules, animals can't be anything but true neutral. In order to have an alignment other than true neutral, a being must have the capacity to understand moral action. A xenomorph is not sapient, and therefore is incapable of moral choices.
