This beast turned out to be huge !
I saw a few people making whale plushies and I wanted a larger one for myself. In stores they are usually very expensive. Turned out that making them is also not that cheap! Especially the filling! But should still be cheaper as buying a finished one.
A friend once told me she thought I am the type of person who draws a circle only with a compass. I had to think about that a lot as I made this, cause I just drew the pieces without a pattern onto the fabric and basically just doubled it for the other side . Doing something that large scaled is very forgiving and in general the material and making plushies is forgiving.
Now looking at it, i think the tale needed to be longer and larger to fit the front, but at that point I ran out of material .
I also had trouble finding large eyes. That size was only available in green and though whales don't have green eyes, I got them anyway .
For the filling I used regular synthetic wool and an old fleece blanket. My friend was already telling me to chuck that blanket that had a large hole and was falling apart, but I felt bad doing so and kept using it . Now I had the idea that I didn't have to throw it away, but could actually put it to good use and saving money on stuffing. But it was a pain to cut up that blanket. My wrist hurt and so my friend helped me a bit with that.
Otherwise it was no problem to put all together. I just looked at real pictures of humpbacks and tried to copy that. While researching, I came across this really awesome video: edition.cnn.com/videos/us/2018…
I love whale watching tours. I still need to see a blue whale, which is one item on the very top of my bucket-list.
PS: and screw this camera! It'sa famous Kodak Pix, but I never had such a bad digital camera in my life! It is way to pixeled, requests flash even with brghtest sunlight and the edges are out of focus !
