this is loads better! and the border does it justice. i like the 'sketchiness' as u put it although i dont think its very sketchy, uv blended the pencil in beautifully.
im thinking of doing a portrait of my uncles sheepdog Sky as a surprise, she's worked on their farm since i was a kid and i helped train her so itd be nice to have a nice memory (old doggy now)
any tips on how to draw dogs? iv never really drawn animals :/

Thank you very much I'm glad you like it ^-^
Hmm... Dogs are always very hard, I think so too. I don't think I'm the best person to ask for tips, but I'll try.
Firstly, don't be afraid to spend a lot of time on the drawing, because if you're going to draw all the fur, you just can't avoid spending a lot of time on it. Keep a reference photo near you and keep checking if what you're drawing looks right.
I think that when you draw a living creature, the eyes are the most important thing, they make a drawing come alive. I don't think I really succeeded in this drawing either. It's hard to capture that spirit but definitely worth it when you get it right.
The fur is the hardest thing to do though. Like I said, keep looking at the reference photo and see how the texture of the fur is and where the shadows and where the light is. Be sure to check where the light source is.
And don't give up. I have tons of drawings laying around, waiting to be finished, but I probably never will XD
That's the best advice I can offer, I think.
Oh, and I checked your gallery and I your Nighteyes. I loved him too in the books and you did him justice. Glad there are more Robin Hobb fans around.

thanks, especially coming from another R.H. fan yay shes underestimated as a writer and nighteyes is an awesome character, i will forever more be a fan of wolves i was gonna draw him but thought id tackle paint instead, i left it as it was just the underlayers as that whole thing bout capturing the spirit, well, yeah i was afraid of ruining him - i just cannot seem to do him justice, fitz is even harder!!! (hint hint if you drew fitz id be your best friend forever haha, you could pull it off me thinks!)
thanks for the tips, i know what you mean, its just putting it into practise thats hard part - dont worry bout me and the timescale... drawings take me forever coz i never seem to be satisfied with the amount of detail. thas why none of mine are on DA, all 'unfinished'

She's my favourite writer, actually Actually my favourite character is the Fool. He always appears so strong, but he really cares for Fitz... it's so well written.
Fitz would be terribly hard to draw, especially since drawing realistically without reference is horrible, haha xD And I think Fitz would deserve something realistic. But it's a really good idea. I just might do it some day. ....after I have finished all the rest of my work and my commission
You're welcome Yeah I know. But it's really just practice. I have started drawing when I was 10, I am now 16, so I have had 6 years of practice.
But sometimes I think you just need to let go of a drawing and of the perfectionism in it. I myself am a terrible perfectionist as well and I had the same problem you do, but to try and change that, I started to do real life sketches. In class, actually, bad me. I just draw people in class when they don't notice me. Because they often change poses it means I have to draw fast and look well for any details. Since that I've started to be able to finish things faster.
The funniest thing is that my teachers usually don't even mind when I draw in class.

yeah one of my mates used to be a hell of a lot worse than me at people and now we are the opposite! she doodles all the time and has rapidly improved whilst im doing art at uni and have concentrated more on patterns and other stuff rather than realism.... silly me! im not doing it next year so will get back to doing some, ill make u proud of me one day, u wait and see! ill upload some drawings soon as i realised when talking to u i have absolutely none on here! cant believe u are so good so young!!!! its untrue! we should do a robin hobb art trade when we both less busy! she is my alltime fav writer and the fitz books overtook lord of the rings which is saying something (as iv read them too many times!)

Ohh, but becoming better at art is all dependant on practice and practice alone. It's how I learnt it too. Practice and looking at the world around you.
Mmm but do you like what you're doing at your university?
I'd love to see some of your drawings. I checked your gallery but indeed, I didn't see any artwork at all. I'm really curious as to what kind of art you do.
Hahaha I'm flattered I'm happy you think that I'm good. But yeah, I don't think age matters much... at least not once you're like 14+, I doubt a 3 year old would be very good, haha. It's mostly practice like I said. I have been drawing for six years, actively (which means practically every day...obsessed... obsessed I tell you!).
I'd love to do an art trade with you one day. I've always been wanting to draw Fitz, Nighteyes and the Fool, this would be a perfect time to do it. It also would be a perfectly good excuse to borrow those books from the library again I wish I had them at home, I should start saving some money for them.
Oh and by the way, I'll tell you, English is not my first language, so I apologize for any mistakes I make. I have the feeling this comment was not without mistakes hehe. Don't be afraid to point them out to me ^-^ I would like to study English, so I'm always happy to learn something new.

Mm I know, but they haven't all been translated into Dutch yet. I suppose I could read the English version too, but they are much harder to find around here.
Lol... I have read a little part of the first book, though, but indeed, it did not immediately catch my eye like the Farseer ones did. Perhaps that's another reason why I stopped reading. I will definitely do it, though, once I get around to it.

He was very lovable indeed
Nevare isn't so much? Nuu... .__.
I myself am actually writing a book too, fantasy-like. It's always hard, I must admit, to make characters believable. I always give them flaws too, it makes them stronger than when they would be perfect. In this book, the main person actually is on the 'bad' side. The idea sprouted when I read all these fantasy books with perfect main characters, stories where good always destroys evil, etcetera. Those fantasy stories annoy me, they are so standard. It doesn't matter much to me if they are well written then, because in my opinion, good writing starts with a good plot. I think I was eleven at the time, when I decided I wanted to become a writer and that I wanted to change this trend.
I think that it was two years later that I discovered Robin Hobb's books. I think one of the reasons I loved these series so much is because the characters are believable. They're not perfect, they're real. And that was good to see.
