Description Anyone who knows me in real life knows that I have been completely obsessed with this movie since the trailer was released EONS ago, but because of my untimely stay in Rome, I wasn't around when it was released and by the time I got back, it was already out of theatres. I got the art of book and listened to the soundtrack to exhaustion (OBSCENELY good by the way) but was denied the joy of the movie itself. Well, it came out on DVD last week and last night, I saw How To Train Your Dragon for the very first time.
my heart is so full of love.

So it was good when Hiccup didn't die, but, I mean, the dude lost a leg, on a faraway island. It must have been tense there for a while. And also I have an INTENSE DRAMA fetish.

Brush and ink, watercolor bg, and photoshop colors.

Seeing this I wonder: the ships were mostly broken, and Hiccup lost a leg. How on heart did they manage to bring Toothless back if he can't fly without Hiccup?

Possibility one: The dragon riders brought Hiccup back to Berk and brought any ships that were left on Berk back to Dragon Island to pickup all the Vikings and the flightless Toothless.

Possibility two: everyone flew back to Berk on dragons and Toothless was carried on the back of a larger dragon like a Zippleback or a Monstrous Nightmare.

Late as heck comment! but hey, better late than never.

So I wasn't the only one who wondered how Hiccup could have lost a limb, more than a day's sail from Berk with all the ships burned to cinders, and not bleed to death before they got him home! WHOO practicality!

Seriously though, this really captures the tension and desperation of what could have been a real struggle to get Hiccup back alive (if not in one piece). Love the lighting, and the looseness of the style.

and, how did all those Vikings get home with all the ships burnt?? really now!

It's possible that the leg started out as an injury that wasn't too bad, but it got infected later and they were forced to amputate it.

Linkzilla In reply to rueyeet [2012-11-24 19:21:23 +0000 UTC]

I wonder how it was just a single foot he lost - and I also wonder how he lost it. Did it get severely crushed in the fall and had to be amputated, or did it get cut off some how?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

TheDragonTrainer661 In reply to Linkzilla [2015-06-19 17:57:23 +0000 UTC]

I like the theory that when he fell, Toothless had to grab his foot to save him. I used to not like that very much, but then I realized... Hiccup was the reason Toothless lost half his tail... What if Toothless was the reason Hiccup lost half his leg?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

rueyeet In reply to Linkzilla [2012-11-26 01:15:11 +0000 UTC]

Others have said that the Death's tail club did hit them on the left side, so severe crushing is probably likely -- if he got thrown from the saddle at the same moment his left leg was hit, it could've well snapped right off (ouch!).

There's apparently also a school of thought that Toothless might've saved him by catching that leg in his teeth, but that theory kinda makes me cringe. O.o

'Course, that's all just fan speculation. Dreamworks will probably never tell us for sure.

RayeofSunshine In reply to rueyeet [2013-07-25 03:34:28 +0000 UTC]

I thought it got burnt off (toothless saved most of him, but missed his leg). That would solve the problem with bleeding. Honestly, I think, with the bare minimum of medicine and health I know about, having something burnt off would be much better than cut or bitten off. Searing the blood vessels will stop him from bleeding to death.

    I really know nothing.

Y'know, now that I think about it, Hiccup losing his lef was a stroke of... well, not genius, but dammit, it was pretty bright!

I mean, it makes sense, falling from a height like that, that he wouldn't get off scott-free. And in most movies, the protags get away without a scratch pulling these should-be-deadly stunts.

So Hiccup getting wounded like that gave the movie a bittersweet sense of realism. Which I think more movies should have.
