Thank you everyone who has stopped by and this image!

Hopefully I will get some more astro-photos for you guys down the road. Right now though my equipment is rather limiting (mount mainly).
Keep enjoying!

Wow 20 favs, I know it's not much but that's an accomplishment for me hehe.

Interesting Fact: (not to brag, I promise) This picture is ONE of the best pictures of M51 in existance according to Adam Block at Kitt Peak observatory near Tuscon, AZ.

Reccently, the Hubble Heritage program set its eyes on the enormous galaxy (in the sky at least) and took a collage of photos becoming the longest Heritage project.

See it here: [link]

I love seeing this galaxy so amazing. What is the yellow ballish thing on the left though? I Have no idea.

Amazing, this is one of my favourite galaxies along with the Spindel galaxy.

I find interesting the interaction between galaxies, especially this ones there are two galaxies in this photo bein the whirpool the largest, althouh they're going to merge anyway, but that will be in a few million years.

This is a wonderful photo, but I think the Hubble ones are more impresive, but... there is no comparison, this is a surface made photography and it's awesome.

I was looking for painting references on galaxies, when I stumbled over this. This is amazing, you can see the spiralling solar systems, lots of light absorbing matter (Frozen H²O? Could you clarify this?) and the plasma around the black hole in the centre (at least that's what I assume the yellowish light source at the centre is).

I hate to say it but this image isn't very good quality-wise. It would be incredible if the image was sharper. It's too blurry, IMO.

whirlpool galaxy! the "darling of astronomy". perfectly perpendicular to earth. like a painting haging on a frame for us to see!

this is an amazing shot. its so awesome that you actually took it. i guess i always thought that only computers take shots of deep space! hehehe

have you seen the X structure in the center of the whirlpool?

WOW ... what kind of telescope are you using? And ... HOW MUCH did it cost? LOL I'm also buying a telescope, but just a cheap beginner one for now Love your picture. Really does look as if taken by the Hubble

Not my telescope for this one. See the description, there's a link to the setup I believe.

My personal telescope is an 8" f/4.0 Newtonian Reflector. I recently just did some piggy backing and will post those pictures soon.

Haha, not hubble. Hubble did a mosaic of the whirlpool galaxy recently though, and it's incredible. You should check it out.

I find this to be a fascinating picture. It is not only because the M51 is my favourite among the coumtless celestial objects of the skies. I find your picture to be more detailed than Hubble's in some areas - for example the companion galaxy. The luminescent core of it is not visible in the "better" shot of the galaxy.

I applaud your shot.

Thank you very much . Hubble's picture is incredible and unmatchable by any terrestrial telescope. When we took this picture it was actually the highest quality photo of the galaxy until Hubble finished its array. We were actually quite worried it would come out bad because of bad conditions that night, by hey, it worked.

Kennashi [2007-02-24 02:15:03 +0000 UTC]

what's that thing in the middle of the galaxy, and why is it so much brighter than the other stars?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MilchstrabeSTern In reply to Kennashi [2007-05-07 05:29:26 +0000 UTC]

That would just be the center of the galaxy where there is a large and dense amount of mass. Thus, there are many more stars here then there are elsewhere in the galaxy. That's sort of why galaxies spin around the center point, there is such a large amount of mass at the center that all the other stars orbit aroun that point.

I've got some similar shots taken with the Hawaii Faulkes Telescope (2 meters of mirror diameter). I don't know if I can upload them to deviantart though. I must read the terms of use from cover to cover to find out.

Unbelievable that you don't get more feedback about this image, it's truly hyper professional *dreaming of a ST-10*...
You even can see that both galaxies aren't the same! And all these other galaxies in the background! This is a masterpiece!

MilchstrabeSTern In reply to Tsuki-lime-chan [2006-04-20 05:26:16 +0000 UTC]

I greatly appreciate that!

It's more of a matter of how many people watch you, and how many people look at the astrophotography section. You can submit just an "OK" photo, but have 1,000 watchers, and get 50 fav's easy.

It's too bad I don't own this telescope, if I did, I would definitely do more of this kind of thing. If I ever get a good german mount for my telescope, I will see what I can do with astrophotography at home.
