Very nice, can almost hear the sound cut right before the screen flashes and you hear him put the sword back in sheath.

That is SO cool. I love the way it's colored, it looks different somehow--how'd you do that?

Thanks! I was using Painter's Dry Media->Oil Pastel brush to lay down the original color, which makes it look sort of thick and creamy, for want of a better description, and then blending it all with first a marker tool I got from Don Seegmiller's Digital Painting and Character Design book, then giving up on that and using Painter's Liquid-> Just Add Water blending tool. The bluish-white hakama turned out pretty cool -- I was working on a white background canvas, so I didn't put any white down. I just put the grey/blue shadws in and blended their edges, making sure the strokes followed the motion of the fabric. That worked so well I'm going to try it again on something else soon.

Wooowwww..... I LOVE Kenshin, and this is awesome!! And you know, the heart beat thing works, and I'll tell you why! I have personally watched half a dozen times THE coolest Kenshin music video I've ever seen in my whole entire life!!! It's on animemusicvideos.org, and it's set to Ayumi Hamasaki's "Evolution", and it is SO AWESOME!! And there are these half-second pauses sometimes right before something happens.... THAT's what this picture said to me.
It also said, "I am a cool picture! Love me! Hug me! Fav me! MWAH!"

MMm this has got to be one of your better CG's I don't really know much about Kenshin, and therefore have no idea about it, but I think I get the jist of all your heartbeat talk lol. And oh, so what is a tachikawa pen?
I like his pants the best, the folds are so smooth and move the way they would if he was in that pose perfectly describing it, I knew when I saw it immediately that it was done in painter, I get the impression when you use photoshop and when you use painter you tend to get a completely different kind of colored CG, I get this impression every time I see a seperate program used for painting in the colors, it's amazing. Do you think there's a difference between the two? I don't have painter, but seeing how these kinds of drawings turn out, I'm thinking about getting myself one.

Thanks! Tachikawa's a brand name -- it's basically a refillable fountain pen made for manga artists. I have no idea how many pros actually use it, and there's only one pen tip size, so I can't get thinner or wider tips for different size lines, but it's better than a technical pen like Micron if you want a more warm feel to your lines.
There's definitely a difference between PS and Painter. Painter's specifically made to try to emulate traditional media. Kenshin was done using the Dry Media - Oil Pastel with a bunch of blending done by Liquid - Just Add Water, and that gives a different feel from this one , which I did in Painter using the Dry Media - Pastel tool. You can get a traditional-painting look from Photoshop, like I did in this one , but it's still fairly limited and better for images where you want a more graphic look like this one or this one .
PS is better at making and refining selections than Painter, which is why when I use color flats to start a piece, I put them in with Photoshop, then switch to Painter to shade it. That's how I did the Kabuto pic, and you can see the color flats in the image I have linked from there that shows the stages I went through to do the pic.
So, basically I recommend Painter along with Photoshop (or Paint Shop Pro ot Open Canvas or The Gimp, whatever you're using) because it extends what you can do. You can get really stunning work from Photoshop - I've got the Capcom art book and most of the artists managed to get Painter-ly effects using Photoshop on those pieces, but it takes a lot more ingenuity and practice, I think. NOt that Painter doesn't take rpactice, because the interface is clunky and there are SO MANY options that it's overwhelming. I *still* ahvne't used most of them and I've had Painter over a year.

Interesting, it's too bad that none of the links you pasted up there to show me worked, but I definately get the idea now. I was always wondering why nothing I did in Photoshop never really amounted to the same brand of style from Painter, it took a long time before I started to notice the difference, mostly shown to me by Kisho, because no matter how hard I tried in Photoshop I couldn't get the same feel and tone he got in Painter. Now I really want to just try it out, but i've never done that before... and I know my way around Photoshop pretty well by now... Maybe I should try Open Canvas, would you say that has the same kind of affects as Painter? if you think so then i'll definately give it a try, I really always have liked the way pieces look when used with Painter, and though by now i'm starting to get the Painter look from Photoshop, it takes a while to get my Photoshop works to that stage, and I just want to try out other programs to see if it matches what I want more... I never really get what I want out of Photoshop, though lately I have been getting closer, with my most recent post Inspirational Stuffs. But with a lot of my bigger CG's, like Dark Akira ---I just don't get that feeling i'm going for. I can't really describe it, but I really wanted a more smooth looking CG, I think I got that affect to an extent, but not to the level I was looking for. It's like that with any of my larger drawings, because it is difficult to work with when I start realizing it's not going the way I want and it's not going to be the way I want. I do want it to look like Traditional, and that's what the problem is I think, because i'm trying hard to get that in Photoshop and i'm not, so I get discouraged.

Ack?! They didn't work?! Well, blame DA for that - they were all links to pieces in my gallery.
Yeah, I lusted after Painter for a long time because I really liked the feel of a lot of work I saw that was done in Painter. And then I got it and discovered that it was amazingly tough to get used to doing it because the interface is so gawdawful, and I haven't really hit what I wanted to do with it yet, bit I'm getting better - Kenshin's hakama above are starting to be what I wanted.
I've seen a lot of nifty OpenCanvas stuff on DA recently, so I'm starting to think about it. There's a deviant who's going to send me version 1.0 of it, which is freeware, so I can try it. I'll send you a copy when I get it. I'm not sure how much the recent version of OC costs, but if it's significantly cheaper than Painter, I'd say yeah, all the way. If I like how I work with it, I'll probably end up getting a copy of it and switching back and forth depending on what I want to do.
I think that if someone's an expert in a particular program it's easier to beat the program into submission and get it to give you exactly what you want out of it, but if you're not expert, it's easier to go to a program specifically designed to do what you want to do.

Excellent. Just curious... is there a reason you prefer Painter over Photoshop for coloring? I've seen similar coloring done in both. Just wondering... deciding if I need to save up to get Painter or no, along with a Wacom (ya know, when I win the lottery?)

Painter does a better job of emulating traditional media when coloring. Photoshop is perfectly useful, but it tends to be a bit limited. Photoshop's easier to learn to use, though. Painter's got WAY too many tools and options. I'd advise getting Painter (about $100 with the academic discount, I believe - *much* cheaper than Photoshop) because I think it's more versatile, although Photoshop is better at handling layers and layer effects and selections, so I pretty much flip back and forth between them.
I *really* want Painter 8, although the upgrade will have to wait until I'm employed, because of teh Digital Watercolor tool. I havne't got the hang of the watercolor in Painter, and it's a system resources hog, so if you're working on a piece of any size it's like *brush* ... wait ... wait ... wait ... *brush*. Digital Watercolor apparently solves that problem. Here's a piece I found yesterday done in Digital Watercolor. There's pieces out there that look a lot more like real watercolor, though.
The Wacom tablets usually come with Painter Classic, although it doesn't work in Win2K,a s I found out to my chagrin when I bought my tablet.

Well, as far as the Wacom, I'm using Nathan's on loan, so I don't have any programs aside from Photoshop that'll work for it. Maybe when his computer is running again I'll try it out.
